(PHOENIX, AZ) The Arizona Natives, representing the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, captured the 2006 Native American Recognition Days (NARD) softball game on October 18, 2006. The Arizona Natives defeated the Arizona Professional Chapter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AZPC of AISES), 20 to 7. By winning, the Arizona Natives won the NARD softball traveling trophy and the opportunity to host the 2007 NARD softball game. The game was played at the Lehi Community Center Field located on the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community.
Members of the Arizona Natives team were: Damian Tolino, Tricia Yazzie, Shawn Wato, Vanessa Williams, Brian Jones, Cathy Vasquez, Bryon Peshlakai, Maria Franco, Dwight Bizahaloni, Queta Kiyanni, Stanley Manuelito, Sandy Davis, and Laura Spencer.
Members of the AZPC of AISES team were: Elmer Roanhorse, Lavonda Begay, Arkie Huskey, Alonzo Begay, Mario Tennequer, Nedrah Burbank, Trina White, Marsh Etsitty, Ricqual Plummer, Dale Begay, Jeremy Huskey, Kyle Huskey, Hunter Brown, Gilford Winney, Samantha Aguirre, Arletta Kayonnie, Chris Orona, Quannee Oosahwe, and manager Tony Kahn.
As hosts, AZPC of AISES provided a picnic dinner of sub sandwiches, chips and soft drinks before the game for all to enjoy. The intent of the game is to promote socialization between two Native American organizations in the Phoenix area, enjoy a picnic and softball game.
Both teams started out evenly, after two innings, the score was tied at 3-3. After four innings, the Arizona Natives led 6-4. After seven innings, the Natives still led 10-5. In the last two innings, the Natives outscored AZPC 10-2, to make the final score 20 to 7.
Two time NARD softball champions, AZPC relinquished the traveling trophy. AZPC made improvements to the NARD traveling trophy by adding a 6” wooden base with names of all the softball winners.
